The number of words per line is called the measure. If there are less than 7 words, readers drop down too frequently; more than 15 and they might get tired before the end of the line.
Hang the small characters like bullets and quotation marks for a strong flush left edge; this is useful in creating active layouts.
And when available, use old style numbers.
